You can ask your vet to perform a fine needle aspiration to get small amount of the cells and send it to a pathologist to find out what kind of tumor it is.
If it is lipoma, you really don't have to worry too much. Most of time lipoma won't cause problem unless it compress on the nerve or blood vessel. To remove them is fairly easy and I never heard the surgery will trigger a spread out.
